Treatment to injured wildlife stressed

- BY KUMARA C.LIYIANARACHCHI

Wildlife Conservation Officers in Ampara area voiced concern over the poor attention paid by the Ampara Wildlife Health Management Unit on providing treatment to the injured or sick wild elephants and performing the autopsies of dead wild animals.

A senior official of the unit said the carcasses of dead wild elephants were left for days without any action being taken. He pointed out that an injured wild elephant was left to suffer in the jungle in a critical condition for more than a week without any treatment.

Meanwhile, the Wildlife Conservation officials in Inginiyagala said that the carcass of a wild elephant which believed to have drowned in Sellakka-oya in Baduluwela was lying in the canal. They said that the carcass was in decomposed state and was polluting the canal that feeds Inginiyagala reservoir.

However, the Ampara Zonal Assistant Wildlife Director M.H. Weerasinghe said he was aware of the prevailing problem and had informed the relevant authorities for their action.
