Past rugby stars showcase at Rugby Rumble on June 14-15

It’s going to be a showcase of talent by the former rugby stars when they scrum down on two days at the Seven a Side Tag Rugby Tournament Rugby Rumble scheduled to be held on June 14 and 15 Havelock Park.

The tournament will be worked off from 3.00 p.m. onwards with the round robin matches being played on the first day followed by the knockout matches for qualificat­ion to the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield titles on the second day.

The event a brainchild of one of Sri Lanka’s top rugby player and renowned rugby referee Dilroy Fernando will see 16 teams vying for honours in two age groups over 25 and over 35.

The teams will comprise of old boys of 14 schools namely D.S. Senanayake College, Isipathana, St Peter’s, Zahira, St Anthony’s K’tota, Trinity, Royal, S. Thomas’, St Joseph’s, Dharmaraja, Ananda, Wesley, Kingswood and Science College and the other two teams will be two mixed school teams Green Dragons and Royal Rumblers.

Tournament Director Dilroy Fernando briefing the media stated that an event of this nature is held for the first time in Sri Lanka.

Speaking further he added that each team will need to have 15 players comprising of ten male players and five female players. The seven players playing in a match should consist of five males and two females, which is a must.

The teams have the option of fielding female players from the national team but for males players who have represente­d a Division ‘A’ club during the 2014 season in the league, knockout or sevens tournament­s will not be eligible to participat­e.

Gahanath Pandithage, CEO DIMO speaking on the occasion said that they were delighted to be a part of this extra-ordinary tournament, which is being held for the first time in Sri Lanka. “This is no doubt going to be a memorable event for the past rugby players,” Pandithage said. Apart from the tournament there will be plenty of action outside the playing field with plenty of fun activities for kids and the whole family. The highlight of the family fun would be the unique experience of artificial wakeboardi­ng being introduced for the first time in Sri Lanka.
