According to the Mahawansa, Sri Lanka’s history begins from Prince Vijeya who came with 700 people and formed Aryan settlements in the country. According to the chronicle he met Kuveni on his arrival in the island and she was making cotton thread when he met her. It is a clear indication that technology was well developed at that time in Lanka. However, the Mahawansa writer had left a vacuum in Sri Lanka’s history by starting the chronicle with the advent of Viyeya . Therefore there are many in Sri Lanka who are not prepared to attribute the beginning of Sri Lanka’s history to the advent of Prince Vijeya. It can be justified to a certain extent. The Mahawansa writer started Sri Lanka’s history from Prince Vijeya based on his personal concepts. According to legends, King Ravana ruled Lanka and that he used a flying machine called Dandumonara and there was a Rama –Ravana battle. However, it is obvious that a well developed society existed in Sri Lanka before the arrival of Prince Vijeya.

Dr. Mirando Obeysekara is a researcher in history who had delved into the history of the country before the advent of Vijeya and has studied the historical facts about King Ravana. However, it is left to the reader to accept or reject the views mentioned here as elucidated by Dr. Obeysekera.

According to Dr. Obeysekara, Ravana who had been unconscious after the arrow shot by Rama hit him regained consciousness about five years ago. Dr. Obeysekara argues that Ravana was in possession of nuclear weapons. He says that it is at the wishes of Ravana that gold and gem deposits emerged in the country and landslides and gale winds occurred.

Born at Rassagala on May 31, 1940 his father Samuel Obeysekara was a director of the Nilgala Estate Company. His mother was Sissy Galagoda Kumarihamy.

After his primary education at Hegalla Vidyalaya in Kalutara, Samuel entered Ananda College in Colombo. He is a graduate of the University of London and has a MA from the Columbia Pacific University. He has worked as a lecturer in the Columbia Pacific University of California that had also awarded him a professorship.

He has written over 54 books i n Sinhala and English on various subjects including social changes brought by the Portuguese invasion, history of elephants, heritage of the Up-country, Yaksa , Deva and Naga tribes.

It is of significance that he had written books after extensive research in several areas in the country. The following is a narrative about King Ravana as narrated by Dr. Obeysekera.

WHO IS RAVANA?

The Rishi called Pulasthi Muni was Maha Brahma’s son and he was King Ravana’s grandfather. Pulashti Muni’s son was Visharawas Muni. His first marriage was to an Indian woman and their son was named Kuwera. After Vishrawas Muni ,his son Kuwera ruled Sri Lanka. He ruled from Sigiriya. The remains of his palace has been buried deep in the ground below Sigiriya. Vishrawas Muni worshipped the Sun. However they had known about Buddhism. King Ravana has a history of 7,500 years and Buddhas had been living in the world then. Konagama Buddha was living at that time. King Ravana followed Buddhism as a philosophy but worshipped the Sun.

Kuwera became king after his father Vishrawas Muni abdicated and left for the east to live the rest of his life as a hermit. Kuwera was Vishrawas Muni’s son of the first marriage. Ravana was the son from his second marriage. King Sumalin who reigned before Vishrawas ruled from Giruwapattu. He was a mighty ruler with miraculous powers. Through his clairvoyance he saw the future of the country. He had a beautiful daughter called Keshini. King Sumalin saw that her son would become king of Lanka. He planned to send his daughter to Vishrawas Muni who was now living as a hermit so that they would fall in love and his daughter would give birth to a child who is destined to become king. However, Keshini was not able to bring round Visharwas Muni to her wishes. On the seventh day she removed her clothes and stood naked before Vishrawas Muni. Then Vishrawas Muni questioned who she was. She said she was Keshini, the daughter of King Sumalin. Thereupon, Vishrawa Muni is said to have bathed her with hot water by digging up a hot water fountain with his sword. Dr. Obeysekara links this legend with the Kinniya hot water fountains. He is of the view that the word “Kanya” (virgin) is mispronounced by the Tamils as Kinninya.

Vishrawas Muni started to live a lay life with Keshini and they had several children; the eldest of whom was Ravana.

It is said that Ravana had ten heads. In fact he had only one head but he was well versed in ten arts and crafts. He knew dancing, music, warfare, and technology. Sri Lanka is said to have manufactured aircraft and submarines during his reign and Ravana possessed more than 90 aircraft, one of which was his Dandumonara aircraft. He had taken away it by force from King Kuwera. It is said that he waged war against King Kuwera and seized the throne with the help of the Yaksa clan.

Several races including Yaksas, Naga, Deva, and Gandhabba lived in Sri Lanka at that time. They were human races similar to the present social divisions of Govi, Karawa, and Rajaka, castes.

Ravana ruled from Sigiriya after he became king. He was mightier than King Vishrawas. He had several palaces in Nuwara Eliya, Piduruthalagala, Mawanella, and Wedihitikanda and one of them was an underground palace. King Ravana brought people from Eritria, South Africa and Sudan for slavery and they were settled in South India.

Dr. Obeysekara is of the opinion that the South Indian Tamils are the descendants of mercenary soldiers in King Ravana’s army. It is obvious that Ravana was a powerful ruler who had brought under his sway even some parts of India.

According to Dr. Mirando Obesekara, Rama shot a poisoned arrow to kill King Ravana. However, the latter did not die. He only fell unconscious and he was the individual who lay unconscious for the longest time. He lay in an underground palace at Udaha Mahakudugala in the Nuwara Eliya District. History has it recorded that the people offered flowers and paid homage once a year to the king lying unconscious and every one of them received a precious stone under the blessings of the king. However, those who received the gem stone die in three months, he would die. This has been going on for a long time and these secrets came

King Ravana is now a god roaming all over the world in disguise as an average individual. However, the only difference is that he moves several inches above the ground. to light during research in the area.

The individual who received the gem would not die of natural causes but he is killed by an invisible force to prevent him from disclosing the secret.

King Ravana regained consciousness when the LTTE terrorism was about to end. Gem and gold deposits were reported from several areas of the country as a result of his rising.
