Man arrested for sending obscene sms

- BY SAJEEWA KOTTAGE

A man had sent obscene messages to more than 200 women by allegedly using a SIM card which belonged to the custodian of the Rinddeebendiella Devala, who was killed in a train accident near the Maho railway station last December.

The suspect, Mellapottlage Mahish Sampath Priyadarshana (30) of the Minuwangete area who was an employee of the Devala had sent more than 1000 offensive messages to women.

Police said the suspect was arrested during investigations on the complaints made against him to the Maho, Wariyapola, Polpithigama and Wellawa police stations. The suspect stole the SIM card from the custodian of the Devala after the latter was run over by a train and used it to call several women by tracing their contact details from commercial advertisements.

Investigations revealed that even the family lives of several women were tarnished due to these messages by the suspect and that he had been carrying on this misdemeanour for more than five years.

The suspect was in possession of two SIM cards, two memory cards and camera phones containing pornographic movies and images.

The suspect was to be produced before a psychiatrist subject to a Court order being obtained from the Maho Magistrate.

Maho police HQI, IPRuwan Chaminda, Sergeant Ratnayaka (3563), Constable Milton (55135) are conducting further investigations under directives of ASP H.M.P. Herath.
