Do mayors come in pairs?

They did, in the Moratuwa Municipali­ty

According to an identifica­tion card issued by the Moratuwa Municipali­ty,

Moratuwa Municipal Councillor, Suranga Aponsu found himself named the Mayor of Moratuwa. Consequent­ly the Moratuwa Municipali­ty had two mayors, Mayor Samanlal Fernando and Mayor Suranaga Aponsu.

identifica­tion cards bearing such a glaring mistake. “This is not only an insult to Mayor Samanlal Fernando but also to my position in this council as an elected member,” he said.

The councillor went on to say identifica­tion cards were signed by the municipal commission­er and other officials. “The municipali­ty administra­tion must have this error rectified soon,” he said.

Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando speaking on the incident said that all identifica­tion cards will be reissued. “We have collected all identity cards that were issued by the municipali­ty for reissue,” he said. Admitting the glaring mistake and said, “There is a problem with the administra­tion and we will resolve this issue soon.”
