Is the TNA playing a pro-LTTE role?

- Nihal De Alwis

Having read certain facts in an article published about the slaying of late Kingsley Rasanayagam by the LTTE whose 10th death anniversary falls on October 19, it is sad that our politicians have still not learnt a lesson after three decades of terrorism.

It was experienced Tamil leaders of the past who made a serious blunder by forming the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF). Ultimately it turned out to be a Frankenstein and they eventually disregarded leaders like the late Amirthalingam. Later Tamil leaders were assassinated and the LTTE took over the leadership of Tamils in the North and East.

Where were the present TNA leaders when the LTTE was terrorizing this country? It is indeed a shame that former Supreme Court Judge Wigneswaran and his political colleagues are attempting to achieve what Prabhakaran and the LTTE failed to do under the guise of Human Rights.

The then UN Secretary General in a report titled, Standards and Norms in the Field of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice published in 1996 has clearly shown a clear plan of Integrated Action on Victims of Crime and Abuse of Power.

The TULF Secretary General Veerasingham Anandasangaree had the courage to issue a statement critical of the TNA. Obviously, Kingsley Rasanayagam’s death was not an accident but allegedly a planned execution with the knowledge of some of the TNA politicians holding office.

If the TNA intends to achieve some benefit democratically for the Tamils in the North and East they must forget ‘ Eelam’ and toe the democratic path with the Central Government which has done much to improve the conditions in terms of security and safety in the NE.

The TNA should stop seeking assistance from the Diaspora and contacting India and believe it is a part of the Government of Sri Lanka.

I recall the former Singapore Prime Minister telling his people during the protests in China’s Tinnaman Square and when some Singaporeans were holding demonstrations in support that, “We are all Singaporeans. If any one feels they are from China they can leave immediately to China and fight their cause there and not in Singapore.” That ended the demonstration.

The Tamils in the NE have lost because of terrorism imposed by the LTTE. Now is the time to get together and live peacefully as one nation.

How can any minority community say they are deprived when they are permitted to buy land and live in any part of the country and run any legitimate business.

It is only the majorrity community which is prevented from purchasing land in the North under the “Thesawalami Laws”. The Government is making every effort to educate the future generation in all three languages. The Government is right in refusing to withdraw the army realizing the chaos of 30 years of terrorism. It is unfortunate that the 18th Amendment did away with the public service commission, the police commission and the judicial commission. The government should correct this blunder and do away with the executive presidency by the bringing a 19th Amendment.
