Janashakthi Welfare Club helps Ududumbara schoolchildren

-

Deserving students from Kalugal Oya Kanishta Vidyalaya, Ududumbara recently received stationery and school shoes from the Janashakthi Sports and Welfare Club to the value of Rs. 1 million.

The project was held in line with Janashakthi’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

The Sports and Welfare Club was able to donate adequate stationery to fulfill the school’s requirements for the year 2015. Each student also received a pair of shoes along with a school bag with stationery items. A photocopy machine, computers and a laptop were also donated to the school.

One hundred and ninety three students from Grades 1 to 11 attend Kalugal Oya Kanishta Vidyalaya walking a distance of approximately 3 to 4 kilometres a day. It was found that 75 percent of these students do not have shoes to wear.

“We wanted to donate to a truly deserving school, and the principal of this school said they had a need for stationery and shoes. When we arrived, the students and parents were all gathered to meet us, and the students sang a song specially composed for the occasion, which was a lovely surprise,” said President of the Janashakthi Sports and Welfare Club, Charinda Fernando.

He added that all the donations had come from Janashakthi employees, and it was the first project hosted by the Club for an external party.

“As an insurer, we strive to contribute positively to the community. It was heartwarming to see all the parents including the teachers thanking Janashakthi for our small contribution towards uplifting the school’s education and reducing the parent’s burden for 2015. We plan to continue doing so in the future, given the success of this project,” Fernando said.
