Nalanda College Senior Old Boys Collective member and former Nalanda Sports Club President Daya Abeysekera said yesterday that the school’s 90th Anniversary should be marked next year and not this year.

He said that the Principal of Nalanda College should correct the year of the establishment of the college by correcting its history and it was not necessary to cancel the programmes organised for the 90th anniversary celebrations this year.

Addressing the media with the senior old boys Collective of the Nalanda College at the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka auditorium in Colombo , he charged that the principal of the college had made a grave mistake regarding the founding date of the college and that they, as senior old boys had to rectify the mistake.

Ananda College. On November 1, 1925, it had been registered by the name of Nalanda College. There is ample evidence to it. We discussed with the former principals like Gunapala Wickramaratne, Dharma Gunasinghe, Hemantha Prematillake, andV.G.Sumansasekera who managed the college for four decades and they accepted the fact that the college was established in 1925 and its history had been distorted,” he stated.

He added that Ven. Ananda Maitriya Thera in the Commemoration Magazine published on the completion of the 50th Anniversary of the College had said that Nalanda College had been established as a branch of Ananda College with 16 classes and it had been registered as a separate college on November 1 in 1925.
