APPARELS DOMINATE MERCANTILE VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The apparel factories dominated this year's Mercantile Volleyball Tournament conducted by the Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka at the National Youth Centre courts at Maharagama recently.
Hasantha Perera (Textured Jersey Lanka PLC) emerged the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament which was full of excitement held in three categories - Super League, Championship and Division A.
Winning the Super League (Men’s) was Textured Jersey Lanka PLC beating Brandix Intimate Apparel LtdWelisara. The third place was Brandix Intimate Apparel Ltd-Minuwangoda. Hasantha Perera (TJ) was the Most outstanding player with Smeda Champika (Brandix) and Asanka Sujeewa (TJ) ) becoming the Best Spiker and Best Setter respectively.
Super League for women’s was won by MAS Intimates CasuallineMawathagama with Brandix Intimate Apparel – Minuwangoda becoming the runners-up. Brandix Intimate Apparel – Welisara team was placed third. Winning all three player awards were MAS Intimates' Shiromi Mendis (Most outstanding player), Thilini Wasana (Best Spiker) and Nisanka Sadamali (Best Setter).
The Men's Championship was won by SLT Human Capital Solution beating Brandix Essentials – Ratmalana. Brandix Intimate Apparel Polonnaruwa was third. Thisura Lakshan (SLT HC) - Most outstanding player was Kasun Dilan (SLT HC) - Pubudu Madusanka (SLT HC) won the - Best Spiker and the Best setter awards.
Brandix Uknits - Mirigama won the Women's Championship with MAS Casual line-, Mawathagama becoming the runners-up. MAS Unichela (Pvt) Ltd- Linea Clothing, Pallekelle was placed third. Chapa of (Brandix) was the Most outstanding player, Kasuni Tharuka (Brandix) was the Best Spiker while Sureka of (Brandix) the Best setter.
Men'sA- Division was won by VTA Holdings Pvt Ltd beating MAS Active - Leisure line, Katunayaka in the final. Quantum Clothing was third. The Most outstanding player was Pathum Sameera (VTA), A. Siriparath (VTA) Best Spiker and Sadith Sudarshan (MAS) Best Setter.
According to the President, the Mercantile Volleyball Association of Sri Lanka (MVA - SL) Mangala Perera, Executive Director, CW Mackie PLC, the association was able to achieve the primary objective of providing employment to 1,200 players in the mercantile sector and to popularize the national sport of volleyball among the mercantile sector companies.
