- BY K. RAHAMATHULLAH

“The general public are eagerly waiting to teach a good lesson to those who strive hard to entice the general public with the help of foreign powers to plunder their votes,” said EPC Minister of Road Development, Irrigation, Housing and Construction, Rural Electrification and Water Supply M.S Uthumalebbe at the Addalachchenai Central Committee Meeting of the National Congress Party.

The meeting was held recently and presided over by Minister Uthumalebbe to extend support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the forthcoming Presidential Elections. Addressing further he said that President Rajapaksa’s name should be printed in gold letters for rescuing the country that was engulfed in terrorism for over 30 years. “The Western powers against the accelerated

taking place in the country under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapasksa were funding the UNP to de-stabilise the country and to revert it back to the dark era. Terrorism was a burning issue in the country before the war was brought to an end. Farmers, students and the people in general could not move about freely and were living in constant fear. We have got rid of that fear psychosis today and are living in peace and harmony,” he said.

EPC member Uthumalebbe said there were issues that need to be addressed.

“We do not deny the fact that there are issues in the country. It is quite natural that in a multi ethnic country different issues could crop up such as the ethnic issue, provincial powers, religious and cultural issues. But we are quite confident that those issues can be solved through discussions. Hence, the Muslim community, in particular should act with patience and in an intelligent manner at the forthcoming Presidential Elections,” said the EPC Member. EPC Member Uthumalebbe said that two thirds of the Muslim brethren outside the North-East lived in amity with the majority community. Hence, the need of the hour is to act wisely towards their safety and their future. There is no doubt that Mahinda Rajapaksa will emerge the winner at the forthcoming Presidential Elections and the Muslim polity should work as stake-holders of that victory. The Muslims by winning the goodwill towards his victory could create a platform to address their issues with authority. “Marhoom M.H.M Ashraff said the prophetic words then that Muslim Congress would never extend support to Ranil as long as he navigates the UNP. The ploy adopted by the international community in the two years to change the regime in this country had shattered the hopes and aspirations of the people and the political leaders of this country.
