Anti-Corruption Front says new govt. no better than the last
The Anti-Corruption Front (ACF) charged yesterday that the present government was no better than the previous government when it came to fraud and corruption, considering the frauds that had taken place during the first 59 days of its 100-day programme.

The ACF insisted on a full-fledged inquiry over the alleged insider trading that had taken place during the financial bonds issue of the Central Bank (CB). There were reports concerning alleged deals made by Perpetual Treasuries, a firm connected with Arjun Aloysius, the son-in-law of the present CB Governor, Arjun Mahendran. ACF member Shiral Lakthilake urged the CB Governor to make a public statement on this matter. “Appointing a three member committee to investigate this is not enough. A formal, transparent investigation is essential. The governor should resign temporarily till the investigation is completed. That is the only way to ensure transparency,” he said. The Front said it was necessary to conduct an internal management audit in all government institutions as a measure to eradicate fraud and corruption. On the Avant Garde issue, ACF said that since former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former Chief Justice Mohan Peiris were directors of the Avant Garde Company, they should take the responsibility for the controversial floating armoury incident.
ACF Convener Nishantha Shree Warnasinghe insisted that the president punish the responsible parties without telling them to make statements to the CID or the Bribery Commission. Mr. Warnasinghe further said that public expectations of good governance in the country by a complete elimination of corruption were being ruined by a few officials.
