Researchconducted by medical specialists had revealed that the suicide rate in the country had increased to reach alarming proportions and that an average of eleven persons committed suicide every day. They have cited the complexity of needs created by advancement of technology and competition in the education system as being the main cause of stress that often led people to contemplate suicide.

Consultant Psychiatrist of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Dr. Ramani Ratnaweera explained that the struggle to achieve multifarious needs in life resulted in anxiety that develops into mental depression. victim in this case often feels that he or she is alone and feels helpless. This often results in feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness leading to that person wanting to end their life. It is a sad fact that 20 per cent of persons who suffer from depression end up taking their own lives. About eleven people commit suicide in Sri Lanka every day. This can be reduced to the minimum if parents take time to converse and take adequate care of their children in adolescence. Parents must have a close rapport with their children and look into their needs all the time,” Dr. Ratnaweera said.
