Galle Rampart to be conserved
Aproject to conserve the historic Galle Rampart - a world heritage - has been launched by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).
Development Projects Director Champika de Silva said the Rampart would be conserved with enhanced facilities to the local and foreign tourists who visit the monument of the Dutch rule in Sri Lanka. The project would be funded by the World Bank.
She said the historic dungeons, armouries, tunnel ways, flights of steps leading to the top of the rampart that had been in a dilapidated condition, would be conserved under the supervision of the Department ofArchaeology. The project would be implemented with the help of the Galle Municipal Council and the Galle Heritage Foundation.
The Galle Rampart which is the largest Dutch Fortress in the country was declared an archaeological monument in 1971 and a world heritage in 1988.
