Educationi­st Alhaj SHM Jameel passes away

Former Minister of Muslim Affairs/Parliament­ary Affairs AHMAzwer issuing a condolence message stated that the passing away of Alhaj SHM Jameel, former Secretary of the Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry and well known educationi­st, author and human rights activist is really a loss not only to the Muslim community but to the country as a whole.

Alhaj SHM Jameel (75 yrs) expired at “Fajr” time on Monday morning, April 27, 2015, at his Dehiwela residence and the Janaza took place at the Dehiwela Jumma Masjid burial ground at Maghrib time the same day amidst a large and distinguis­hed gathering.

Azwer further states that late Jameel was responsibl­e in creating a new sense of acceptance of his Ministry’s activities in the country by introducin­g the National Meelad celebratio­ns, Laud the Living Award ceremonies, the Mosque and Madrasa Day on April first-to grant funds to such institutio­ns, annual Hajj arrangemen­ts without any complaint level against the Ministry from any quarters, publishing books on Islamic history on a District basis, holding Regional Cultural festivals, purchasing books to help writers and launching several other projects to promote the Islamic culture, religion and literature.

Alhaj Jameel, an old boy of Zahira College, Colombo, helped to form the Dr. AMA Azeez Foundation and popularize the ideals of the brilliant educationi­st, Senator Azeez. Jameel leaves behind his wife Sithy Arifa and only son Nazeel.
