-

When there is no other option than a liver transplant to save one’s life, then it is advisable to get it done at the earliest in order to get a better outcome. There are many living examples where people with end stage liver failure are leading a quality life with very little compromise, subsequent to a successful liver transplant. This was possible for all of them only because they received the treatment at the right time.

“Outcomes of liver transplant can be excellent if one reaches a tertiary care facility for transplant at the right time for further workup and transplant procedure. The story of this singer says it all. After having undergone a successful liver transplant procedure a few weeks ago, he is now all set to rock the world with his voice once again,” said Forte Group of Companies Chairman M.F.A. Riyas addressing the media at a packed briefing in connection with the miraculous recovery of Sri Lankan singing sensation Namal Udugama.

Prasanna Namal Udugama Baththiramge, a renowned Sri Lankan singer, was diagnosed with liver problems and his conditions were managed medically in Sri Lanka. In February 2015, Udugama’s life turned upside down when his condition severely deteriorated and he was kept under close observation in the ICU. Having been left with only the option of going in for a liver transplant, he chose Global Health City for further treatment procedures.

Global Health City Chennai Senior Consultant HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery Dr. Gomathy Narasimhan said, “Upon his arrival at our hospital, he was completely evaluated by our liver transplant team and he was subsequently advised to undergo work-up for liver transplant. One good thing about Namal’s case was that no time was wasted in getting the tertiary care support for liver transplant procedure and his work-up for the same could be started at the right time.

His wife’s cousin came forward to donate a part of his liver for transplantation. Our liver transplant team spearheaded by Prof. Mohamed Rela immediately swung into action and performed the transplant procedure successfully. Post-surgery, he recovered very fast and now he is in the ward. He is expected to be discharged in the next couple of days and will continue to rock your world with his songs and music again.”

Commenting on the occasion, Namal Udugama said, “When I came from Sri Lanka a few weeks back, I and my family members had no hope. However, the doctors and other staff at Global Hospital were very kind to me and treated my condition with utmost care. Days after my surgery, I can now function independently and go about my daily affairs like any other normal person. I sincerely t hank Prof. Mohamed Rela and his team for giving me a second lease in life.”

Dr. Gomathy went on t o say, “Having one of the leading liver transplant programmes i n India which caters to the needs of almost 20 countries in SARRC, Middle East and African nations, we come across patients with different stages of liver failure to whom a transplant is the only life-saving-option. While some patients come to know about their conditions a bit late, others come to tertiary care facilities too late for further treatment process. Our experience has shown us that the treatment outcomes have been really impressive in the case of those who came to us early for their treatment.”
