Construct new road to avoid hardship to public: Kiriella

If road in front of the Sri Dalada Maligawa would not be opened

Minister of Plantation Industries, Leader of the House, Kandy District Parliament­arian and Chairman of the District Coordinati­ng Committee, Laxman Kiriella stressed the need to construct a new road to avoid hardship facing the public due to traffic congestion in t he town, if the road in front of the Sri Dalada Maligawa would not be opened.

He told the Coordinati­ng Committee meeting yesterday that it was an urgent need to construct an alternativ­e road.

“Constructi­ng a new road to avoid traffic congestion in the Kandy town has been a long outstandin­g need. The proposal to open the road in front of the Sri Dalada Maligawa has become a controvers­ial issue. Road Developmen­t Authority should focus immediate attention on constructi­ng an alternativ­e road,” the minister said.

He instructed the RDA officials and the Maganeguma officials to forward to the next meeting their plans and suggestion­s on constructi­ng a new road.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Kandy Government Agent and several senior officials attended the meeting.
