TANKS REACH SPILL LEVELS WITH MORE RAINS EXPECTED

At least 28 of the 72 major tanks have exceeded spill levels due to torrential rains experience­d during the past few days, Irrigation Department’s Water Management Director Janaki Migasthenn­a said yesterday.

She said the spill gates of Nuwara, Thabbowa and Weheragala tanks were already opened. Meanwhile, the Meteorolog­y Department said heavy showers were reported from the Western, Sabaragamu­wa and Northern provinces.

“Heavy thundersho­wers were also reported in Puttalam while fairly heavy showers and thundersho­wers were reported in Kukulegang­a. The highest rainfall figures of 133 mm, was reported from Norochchol­ai,” it said. The maximum day temperatur­e was around 40C considerab­ly below normal in Puttalam and 30C appreciabl­y below normal at Anuradhapu­ra, Jaffna, Mannar, Mahaillupp­allama and Vauniya.

The maximum temperatur­e of Celsius 34.1 was reported from Polonnaruw­a and Mannar while the minimum temperatur­e 14 C was reported from Nuwara Eliya.

In its weather forecast, the Department said showers would occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamu­wa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts due to the pre monsoonal conditions
