6.396 vendors charged for violating Consumer Act
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said yesterday that they had taken legal action against 6,396 vendors across the country for violating the Consumer Protection Act during the past four months.
CAAChairman Rumy Marzook said during this period, the Authority had collected Rs. 13.6 million as fines by taking legal action against the offenders.
The highest number of raids, totalling 659 was carried out by the Kandy CAAoffice while the Monaragala CAAoffice had conducted the least number of raids, he said.

sale of food unsuitable for human consumption were the main charges levelled against errant vendors and businessmen,” Mr. Marzook said.
He said all the raids were carried out on the information given by the consumers on errant vendors. The CAAhad collected Rs. 72.2 million as fines by taking legal action against errant vendors in 22,402 raids carried out last year.
