- BY H.M. DHARMAPALA, MANOJ COORAY AND KUSAL CHAMATH

All activities of the KalubowilaTeaching Hospital were crippled yesterday due to trade union action staged by the employees on 13 demands including immediate payment of arrears of salaries due on the Public Administration Circular 6/2006 and the special allowance of Rs. 3000. TheAll Ceylon Health Services Union (ACHSU) organised the protest. They staged a walkout from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and staged protests in front of the hospital from 11. a.m. to 12 noon. A group of employees of the Castle Street Hospital for women also joined the protest.

The protestors carrying placards and shouting slogans severely criticised the authorities of ignoring the payment of salary arrears and allowances and other burning issues.

They said they made representations in this regard to Minister of Health, Rajitha Senaratne and the ministry officials, but to no avail. They warned they would launch a massive campaign with the participation of employees in other hospitals if their demands were not met.
