Alternative sources to reduce deforestation

The Sabaragamuwa Community Development Foundation, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) at Indigolla, Depelamulla in Balangoda has implemented a relief project for the people in the area with the technical and financial assistance of United Nations Environmental and Minor Aid Programme and the UNDP.

Agricultural equipment, such as wheel barrows, buckets, rakes, spades and shovels were distributed among 140 families with t he aim of reducing deforestation and introducing alternative sources (gliricedia) for wild saplings currently used in bean cultivation at the meeting held at the Thanjantenna Duvili Ella Junction under the patronage of Dr. Champa Amarasiri of the Marine University.

Religious dignitaries, local entrepreneurs, Grama Niladaris, Police Officers and villagers from Thanjantenna, Kooragala and Beligolla were present at the occasion.
