Minister of Buddha Sasana Karu Jayasuriya said a special Court for Buddhist monks would be established soon to protect their dignity and to prevent them from going to Court as in the case of laymen.
Addressing a ceremony to handover the credentials to the newly appointed Anunayake of the Sri Rohana chapter of the Siamese Sect and to appoint Ven. Prof. Kanattegoda Saddharatna Thera as its Adikarana Sanghanayake, the Minister said it was with mixed feelings that one could speak about the Buddhist society.
“The Vesak festival was held this year in a grand way with State patronage. Large crowds of devotees flocked Temples and observed Sil and attended religious activities. Most of them were young men and women. Meanwhile, many incidents of incest, husbands kill their wives and children, and even the murders of parents by their sons are reported quite often. It is the duty of the Mahasangha to lead the people along the right path and to save the society from this situation. Priority should be given to communal harmony. An atmosphere for all communities to live in peace and harmony should prevail for the forward march of the country. Several incidents that resulted in communal clashes and bloodshed were reported during the previous government, but the present government has taken steps to build amity among different communities and religious groups,”he said.
Ven. Prof. Bellanwila Wimalarathana Thera and Ven. Dodampahala Rahula Thera and Aviation Services Deputy Minister Laxaman Yapa Abeywardene also addressed the gathering.
