Two women fined for deceiving public

They had raised funds under the pretext of providing medical treatment and plastic surgery to the child who was now in a children’s home in Anuradhapu­ra.The suspects were in possession of receipt books printed in the Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Two women were taken into custody by the Hatton police and produced before the Hatton Magistrate for allegedly showing a picture of an injured boy and collecting money under the pretext of raising funds for a Children’s home in the Anuradhapu­ra area.

They were fined Rs.20 each and released after warning. A senior police official of the area said the suspects who pleaded guilty were liable to a fine of only Rs.20 under the law. The two suspects were residents of the Galgamuwa and Megalewa area. Investigat­ions revealed the suspects had visited several areas and collected money in this manner. They told the public that the child in the photo had been seriously injured when a trap gun misfired and his face was severely injured. They had raised funds under the pretext of providing medical treatment and plastic surgery to the child who was now in a children’s home in Anuradhapu­ra. The suspects were in possession of receipt books printed in the Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Under interrogat­ion they revealed several other women were involved in the racket. Police carried out the raid on informatio­n from a businessma­n in the Hatton town who suspected the two women. The suspects attempted to escape arrest but to no avail.

A police team under HQI Hatton police, CI Dayal D. Gangawatur­a carried out the raid on the instructio­ns of the Hatton SP, Saman Yatawara. The suspects were to be produced before the Hatton Magistrate yesterday.
