Deadly spell by Aponso seals win for EWIS

Adeadly spell of 2 overs. one maiden: six wickets for one run by left arm spinner Amila Aponso gave EWIS a resounding 132 run win over Union Assuarance PLC and possession of the glittering ‘DPGC’ChallengeT­rophy in the final of the David Pieris Group of Companies sponsored MCA ‘E’ division cricket tournament at the MCA ground on Saturday, winning the toss, EWIS were in a spot of bother at 82 for four wickets. However, a 92 run stand for the fifth wicket between Charith Fernando (51) and an unbeaten 58 by Sanjeewa Bandara enabled them to reach a match winning 202 for nine in their a uot a overs. Set a target of 203 to chase, UnionAssua­rance were 63 for three, when on came the wrecker Aponso. In his very first over he claimed a hat trick. In his next over he polished off UnionAssua­rance with another three wickets to finish with the sensationa­l figures 6 for one run to give his team a 132 run win,

On the performanc­es based in the league round, Sachintha Fonseka of Eagle logistics was the beat batsman. Amal Attapattu of Unilever was the best bowler. Heshan Wanniarach­chi of EWIS was the man of the tournament while, Rasika Wickramara­tne of Mast Far East was the recipient of a special award for his unbeaten 201 against Dialog Axiata. The match refree and adjudicato­r Pemlal Fernando had no hesitation in picking Amila Aponso as the man of the final.
