PARENTS’ FOLLY ALMOST COST THEIR SON DEARLY

- M. SUSIL PRIYANTHA, KARANDENIYA

An incident of how a zealous parent’s actions almost cost his son the chance to write the GCE(Advanced Level) Exam was reported from the Southern Province. It was reported that the boy’s parents had been feuding with their next door neighbours for quite some time.

The feuding neighbours both had sons who were about to sit for their G.C.E Advanced Level Examination.

As if their own competitiveness was not enough the parents of the boy in question had enlisted the help of a ‘Kapumahattaya’ or healer to make their son so brainy that their son would be able to ace the exam and in the process ‘beat the pants off’ their ‘enemy’ neighbours’ son. He achieved that task by preparing a lotion that he advised the ‘Guinea pig’ son to drink on an empty stomach in the morning just before he left for his exam.

They had gone to great lengths and paid through their teeth to get the concoction which their son was supposed to drink from the ‘healer’. However, alas, their efforts went awry when their son started to vomit and feel sick after drinking the concoction. As if that was not enough he was also forced to visit the bathroom on many occasions and was in much difficulty as a result. At their wits end the boy’s parents were forced to take him to see a doctor who immediately diagnosed the problem and treated him. The young man was then able to get to school in the nick of time and complete the exam and a a catastrophic event was averted as a result.
