Dulan and Dinushki shine at chess selections for nationals
Dulan Edirisinghe won the men’s championship while Dinushki Premanatha Edirisinghe won the women’s championship at the Chess tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation to select chess players for the National Chess Player Pool. It was held at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Malambe.
About 67 chess players at provincial level competed for the men’s championship. Dulan Edirisinghe, M.Sathith Nipun Piyumantha, Elan Mathanga, Minul Doluweera , Prasanna Kurukulasuriya who scored 7 points each in the ten rounds of the competition were selected co-champions.
Dulan Edirisinghe won the championship in the final round. Sathin Nipun Pumantha was the first runner up and Elan Mathanga the second runner up while Minul Doloweera came forth and Prasanna Kurukulasuriya the fifth.
About 38 players competed for the women’s championship and Dinushki Premanath who scored 7.5 points in ten rounds won the championship. Ishini Wickramasinghe and Nethmi Gamage who scored 7 points each in the ten rounds were selected co- champions.
However, Ishini Wickramsisnghe was declared first runner up and Nethmi Gamage the second runner up in the final round.
A group of 12 male chess players and 11 female chess players were selected for the National Chess Pool based on the results of the tournament.
