Thisisthestoryofamanwhoshookthe world through his fight for freedom and equality, while having a love life which was not openly disclosed to the world. Sagarika Dissanayake’s book translated into Sinhala as ‘Che Ge Pemwathiyo’ gives the reader a valuable piece of information about the sensational and emotional side of a rebellious character.

He experienced love at various stages of his revolutionary life, and the book gives a clear indication of what life was like for Che, making an attempt to balance romance and revolution.

ErnestoCheGuevarawasbornonMay 4, 1928, in the city of Rosariyo,Argentina. The book illustrates that he started his fight for freedom in Cuba, though he was born in Argentina. He met Fidel Castro who was another valuable culprit for the American CIA, and escaped several times from their attempts to arrest and murder him, but unfortunately his friend Che was brutally murdered by the CIA. His rebellious character, mixed with a sensitive andanemotionalman, wasoncedescribed by Jean Paul Saatre - “the most perfect man who was born in our times is none other else than Ernesto Che Guevara.” According to Dissanayake’s book, Ernesto Che Guevara was able to balance his love life also with his political and military life, which was indeed astonishing. Before he was murdered, Che always used to say – “you cannot imagine of a revolution without a deep sensational love.” He believed that nobody in the world should be under obligation to any person. He dedicated his life for the betterment of the future generation, and of the universal love he had for all humans. Sagarika says she was tempted to write a book on Che’s love life by responding to a request made by her colleague K.C.J. Rathnayake, to help him to translate a book which was based on Che’s life story. This will be a good attempt to reveal the emotional side of a man who devoted his life for the welfare of others.

There were several romances in Che’s life, and his relationship with his cousin Carmen Cordoba Dilla was based on mutual understanding, and their love for literature. The love that he wouldhavemostlycherished would have been Chichina, the most beautiful woman on earth, to him. They came from different backgrounds altogether. Chichina came from a well-to-do family, but her heart finally went out to Che. But, though she loved Che, she used to lead a more comfortable life than the rugged and difficult life that Che led. But it is evident that she loved this untidy and dishevelled man, but her surprise at Che’s decision to plan a tour in the North American continent shows that she was not ready to accept his rough life.

Hilda Gadea, whom he met in Guatemala, was a perfect match, and later on he got married to this Economist. They had the same intention to offer their services to the society from which they gained their knowledge and understanding. Most of their conversations included philosophical, intellectual, political and social aspects. He loved Hilda as much as he loved Chichina, but the revolution made them separate. They gave birth to a daughter named Hildita. He loved children, which is obvious when examining the letters written to the woman he loved the most after Chichina,Aleida March.ShewasCubanandalsoamember of the July 26th mission under Fidel Castro. The relationship which seems to be the longest relationship Che was in. Through her he had several children, and he also took Hildita under his care after divorcing Hilda. Obviously, the life he led as a familied man, a loving father and a husband is highlighted in this relationship also through the letters full of love and poetic phrases he used on her.

Before he joined the Bolivian war, he wrote his last letter to her. Nothing much is said about his affair with TaniaLaGuerrillawhomhe met in Bolivia and fought in the war together with her. But sources confirm there was some affection, and it was a well-known fact. According to Sagarika, the world knew Che as a dangerous and a rebellious character, but little did they know about his personal and sensitive side of life. He was a good individual, a good father, and a good lover. The young generation nowadays does not understand the true meaning of love. Instead, they are more bent on emotions rather than intelligence, what we call ‘Intellectual love.’

From each woman he loved, he got moral support and he learnt something from them. They were able to understand him and his way of life, and they too learnt something from him. Though we can argue that he would have been a flirt, that’s the way we look at it from our culture. In Asian culture, it seems a bit odd. But in love, he was actually very honest and respected them. Sagarika indeed had made an attempt to showcase Che’s love life with deep and sensible effort, and the reader can go through an interesting and enjoyable journey throughout the whole book.
