- BY ATHULABANDARA

The representatives of two government teachers’ unions and a civil society organization yesterday filed a petition requesting the Human Rights Commission to suspend the appointment of unqualified individuals appointed to senior posts in the Education Administrative Service in the North Central Province and to appoint eligible officers.

The petition was handed over to the Investigation Officer in the Anuradhapura office of the Human Rights Commission Shiromi Priyanga by the President of the Lanka Teachers’ Association, Secretary B.J.S.Fernando, President of the Anuradhapura District Branch H.A.Ananda, President of the Independent Education Employees’ Union S.A.M.Samarasinghe and Convenor of the “We are Citizens” organization Samantha Epa.

They had attached to the petition, details of the alleged ineligible officers holding senior positions in the Education Administrative Service. The petitioners told the media, a group of individuals receiving political patronage were responsible for the on-going malpractices and the appointing of unqualified individuals to senior positions. They pointed out that the education sector in the North Central Province would be seriously affected by it and said that 106 Class 1 officers who have completed all qualifications had been overlooked and unqualified individuals appointed .
