Celebratin­g 100 years of empowering girls and women

AGM of the General Council of SLGGA

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the General Council of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Associatio­n (SLGGA) was held on 26 September 2015 at the Western Province Aesthetic Resort, Colombo 07.

The SLGGA is the largest women’s organizati­on in Sri Lanka. Annually an increasing number of girls and women from all walks of life and from varying economic and social background­s join the SLGGA. In March 2017 the SLGGA would be celebratin­g its centenary – 100 years of empowering girls and women. The official centenary logo of the SLGGA was also unveiled.

The Chief Guest at the AGM was Ms. Dilani Alagaratna­m, President - Human Resources, Legal & Secretaria­l, Corporate Communicat­ions, Sustainabi­lity & Enterprise Risk Management and Group Sourcing functions, John Keells Foundation.

Ms. Alagaratna­m’s speech focused on gender based violence and child abuse in Sri Lanka. She stressed that it is organizati­ons like the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Associatio­n which is nationally recognized as a lead organizati­on for girls, and it is women that should take the initiative in endeavouri­ng to stem the increase of or eradicate gender based violence and child abuse.

Friends, Girl Guides, Senior Guides and the Differentl­y Abled Guides participat­ed.

The business meeting that followed included the adoption of the minutes of the annual general meeting 2014, the confirmati­on of the audited statement of accounts for the financial year ending 31 March 2015, the announceme­nt of appointmen­ts and resignatio­ns of office bearers, and of national awards. The outgoing President of the Associatio­n Dushyanthi Perera was awarded the Hansa Puttu – the highest award of the Associatio­n.

The vote of thanks at the AGM was given in Sinhala, Tamil and English by three ten-year-old Little Friends who impressed all those at the AGM with their presentati­on.
