“Colombo to be made a more people-friendly city” - Ravi

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanaya­ke said the government would soon embark on a plan to develop Colombo as a more people-friendly city.

The Minister pointed out that the proposed plan would be implemente­d in collaborat­ion with the Police, Municipal Council and Urban Developmen­t Authority, and most importantl­y with the support of the people.

Minister Karunanaya­ke made these comments during an awareness raising meeting on the proposed programme together with the officials of relevant institutio­ns held at the Finance Ministry recently.

ColomboDIG­GaminiMath­urata,OICsofpoli­ce stations, councillor­s of the Colombo and Kandy Municipal Councils as well as Urban Developmen­t Authority senior officials attended the programme. Matters pertaining to the security of the Colombo North urban zone, safety of the people residing at Punarjeewa­na multi-storey housing schemes, the Crow Island and surroundin­g areas were also discussed. It was proposed to set up police posts for every 500 residences in the area to ensure safety and security of residents.

The progress of activities conducted with the assistance of the police to minimize environmen­tal pollution on either side of the banks of the Kelani River and the measures taken by the Traffic Police to ease the traffic congestion were also discussed.
