More heavy rains expected
There could be heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm and associated natural disasters as a result of the atmospheric disturbance prevailing over Sri Lanka these days, the Department of Meteorology warned yesterday.
It also warned of adverse weather conditions in seas around the island. On the other hand drought hit North Central and the Northern areas of the island received some rains early last morning.
Aduty forecaster from the Department told the Daily Mirror that there might be temporary localised strong winds during thunder-showers. According to the data put out by the Department of Meteorology, the highest rainfall of 183 mm was recorded from Batticaloa yesterday, while Hambantota recorded a rainfall nearly 100 mm.
The Galle District had recorded a rainfall of 51.2 mm, Ratnapura 44.9 mm, Pottuvil 34.4 mm and Bandarawela 30.9 mm.The North Central and the Northern areas, which were undergoing drought, also received some rains early last morning.
Accordingly Jaffna had received a rainfall of 14 mm, while areas such as Vavuniya and Mannar had experienced a rainfall of around 3 mm to 4 mm.
Meanwhile, an official from the Southern Province said the region had received a rainfall slightly higher than usual. He said people in rural areas in the region had been affected as some roads had gone under water.
