President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to accommodate only political parties that shun communalism in reviving the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)-LED political alliance in view of the local authorities’ election, political sources said yesterday.
President Sirisena had a meeting with the SLFP seniors on Monday to discuss how SLFP-LED alliance or the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) could be reorganized ahead of the election.
A senior minister who attended the meeting told Daily Mirror on condition of anonymity that a progressive alliance would be formed by reviving the party to face the election successfully. He said the political parties, willing to team up with the SLFP, should reject communalism.
He said that steps would be taken to unite the party, and representation would be made to the SLFP faction loyal to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The government is planning to conduct the election in March, next year. The President has already announced that he will give leadership to the SLFP to ensure its victory at the election.
Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), National Freedom Front, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Democratic Left Front, Communist Party, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and Eelam People’s Democratic Party have politically aligned themselves with the SLFP.
