This govt. is a ‘government of failure’: Somawansa

- BY AJITH SIRIWARDANA AND INDIKA SRI ARAVINDA

People have not voted any party to obtain a majority because they do not believe in any of the political parties. For the first time, the SLFP and the UNP have been compelled to form a government of consensus

The People’s Servant Party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe yesterday said a cold war had begun within the two factions - the UNP and the SLFP - and that people could no longer expect good governance from this government.

Mr. Amarasinghe said even though this government was called a government by consensus, it was proved to be a ‘government of failure’ by now.

“People have not voted any party to obtain a majority because they do not believe in any of the political parties. For the first time, the SLFP and the UNP have been compelled to form a government of consensus,” he said.

He said people could no longer expect good governance from this government and that factions in the government had begun to attack each other rather than addressing the issues of the people.

“Today there is no government or opposition in the country. People are unable to identify which is government and which is opposition,” he said.

Mr. Amarasinghe told a news briefing that people are stranded today and that their issues were aggravating day by day.

“Government accused the previous government of obtaining loans at higher interest rates. But the present government is also doing the same. It also obtains loans at a higher interest rate of 6.85%. The production is not increasing. People find it difficult to make ends meet today,’ he said.
