Around 150 Co-operative Societies in Batticaloa defunct

Among the 500 registered Co-operative Unions, over 150 were defunct now, Assistant Commission­er of Co-operative Developmen­t, S. Kirubairaj­asingham said.

He said that they were not functionin­g now due to the lethargic attitude of the employees and also the poor customer service extended.

An awareness program was held yesterday in the Eravur North Co-operative Society auditorium about the laws in place, developmen­t and also the kind of service that should be provided to the public.

Around 150 Co-operative members were present at the workshop presided over by the President of Batticaloa District Co-operative Society, R.rayappu.

He said that there were around 34 different Co-operative Societies such as Multi Purpose Co-operative Societies, Thrift & Loan Society, Fisheries Developmen­t, Livestock Developmen­t, Handicraft­s, and School Co-operative Societies.
