Imesh Hasaranga beat N.J John of the Central Province by two sets to nil (21-16, 21-13) while in the women’s final, Nadeesha beat Upuli Weerasingh­e of the Western Province 23-21, 21-13

Imesh Hasaranga of the Western Province and Nadeesha Gayanthi of the Southern Province won the men’s and women’s championsh­ips at the badminton singles event of the 41st National Sports Festival, conducted by the Ministry of Sports.

This tournament was held at the indoor stadium of the badminton headquarte­rs at Torrington. In final yesterday, Imesh Hasaranga beat N.J John of the Central Province by two sets to nil (21-16, 21-13) while in the women’s final, Nadeesha beat Upuli Weerasingh­e of the Western Province 23-21, 21-13. Imesh and Nadeesha won the most outstandin­g player’s awards’ ( men and women) as well.

In the men’s doubles final, Rajith Dahanayake and Harsha Perera of the Central Province beat Hasitha Chanaka and Lahiru Madushan of the Southern Province by three sets to one (21-16, 16-21 and 24-22). In the women’s doubles final, Oshadi Kuruppu and Vipuli Samanthika of the Western Province won the championsh­ip beating Madushika Dilrukshi and Bhagya Deemanthi of the Southern Province by 21-14, 21-12.

In the mixed doubles, Hasitha Chanaka and Nadeesha Gayanthi of the Southern Province beat Vibhavi Madushan and Oshadi Kuruppu of the Western Province 21-11, 21-15.

The men’s team championsh­ip was won by the Western Province beating Southern Province by 3 sets to one, while women’s team championsh­ip was won by Southern Province beating Western Province by three sets to two.
