LAWASIA 2016 GOLDEN JUBILEE CONFERENCE and Celebrations in Sri Lanka
The Golden Jubilee Conference of LAWASIA will be held from August 12 to 15, 2016, in Colombo, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka officially announced at a launch function recently. This will be the third occasion where Sri Lanka hosts this premier international legal Conference, having already hosted it in 1979 and 1993. The official logo for the Conference was also launched at this function.
Speaking at the event, President of BASL thanked LAWASIA Geoffrey Alagaratnam, PC, for the confidence placed in the BASL in holding this Conference during the Golden Jubilee year. He further said that it was opportune to hold this Conference at this juncture, in order to learn and share experiences in furthering the rule of law and principles of democracy.
President of LAWASIA, Prashant Kumar, said it was an ideal time for LAWASIA to hold its Golden Jubilee Celebrations in Sri Lanka, which is a jurisdiction which has just celebrated the best values of democracy and the rule of law.
Chairman of LAWASIA- Sri Lanka 2016 Committee Upul Jayasuriya, said that since January 8, there was much expectation not only by the Bar but by the entire country and this was the ideal time to host this Conference. He also thanked the Executive Committee of LAWASIA for deciding to hold the significant Golden Jubilee Celebrations in Colombo. As Chairman of the Organizing Committee, he assured all participants look forward to an unforgettable Conference and a magnificent experience.
The Convenor of the LAWASIASRI Lanka 2016 Committee Rajeev Amarasuriya, said this event marked the official beginning of an 8-month-long journey, which will culminate in the much looked forward to LAWASIA Sri Lanka 2016 and that this was a special occasion for the whole of Sri Lanka. He thanked the Corporate Partners Tokyo Cement, Bank of Ceylon, MAS Holdings, Dialog Axiata, Sri Lankan Airlines and Aitken Spence for pledging their support to partner this important event. LAWASIA is an International Organization of Lawyers’ Associations, individual lawyers, Judges, Legal Academics and others which focuses on the interests and concerns of the legal profession in the Asia Pacific region. The Governing body, the LAWASIA Council, is comprised of representatives of the apex legal representative bodies in 25 countries. As such, its policies and agenda directly addresses issues confronting the profession throughout the region. LAWASIA also has over 1,500 individual members from over 50 countries, who have the opportunity to contribute directly to LAWASIA activities through participation in the governance structure.
Through its linkage to over 40 member organisations, LAWASIA has exposure to a collective membership of over 1 million lawyers worldwide. This broad network facilitates relationships in the legal community across the region.
