Man Nabbed for applying for US Visa with forged papers

- BY KURULU KOOJANA KARIYAKARAWANA

A private producer working on freelance basis at a leading private television channel had been nabbed by the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau for attempting to apply for a US Visa by producing forged or fraudulent documents, the Police said. The producer, who has his own registered production house, had been working with the private television channel from time to time and had applied for the visa with a ‘service letter’ bearing a forged signature, it is learnt.

Amongst the supporting documents, he had submitted a letter stating that he was a producer attached to the TV Channel which was signed by the Manager of Human Resources Department. When the US Embassy Visa Section called the TV Channel to verify facts, the former was told that it was not aware of such a document.

The US Embassy lodged a complaint with the Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau following the denial.

The Police said initial inquiries had revealed that the producer had forged the signature of the Channel’s HR Manager and produced a fake letter. OIC-CFIB Chief Inspector P. P. A. Wijenayake, who is in charge of the probe said the suspect was arrested last week and produced in the Fort Magistrate’s Court, where the suspect had pleaded guilty.

He was ordered to be remanded till tomorrow (26) until the CFIB files a plaint.
