CTU unhappy about political appointments

- BY KUSAL CHAMATH

Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) said the steps taken by the government to make political appointments to the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service, Principal’s Service and several other senior positions in the Education sector under the false pretext of providing relief to officers in the education sector who had been subject to political victimization, was a serious injustice.

Ceylon Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the government should take steps to pay compensation to individuals subjected to political victimizations and not appoint them to senior posts depriving many others of their due promotions.

He said the steps taken by the government amounted to total violation of the recruitment and promotion procedure applicable to posts in the education sector. He pointed out that about 4600 appointments and promotions including 360 new appointments and 68 promotions in the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service would go by political favour in this manner. He requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to look into this irregularity.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Professional Association has taken steps to create public awareness in this regard, with the help of several other trade unions and organizations.
