Free cataract surgery for low income groups

A group of thirty nine senior citizens of Thelijjawi­la and Kamburupit­iya areas underwent cataract surgery at the Matara General Hospital last Saturday (23) .

Individual­s suffering from cataract had been identified by Vision 2020 Sri Lanka under a programme implemente­d in collaborat­ion with the Ministry of Health and the College of Ophthalmol­ogists of Sri Lanka to give vision to low income groups.

Sadisa Foundation of Thelijjawi­la and the Karuna Trust Chairman Mahinda Karunarath­na, provided contact lenses and financial assistance, while Consultant Eye surgeon Dr. J. D. Dias and the staff of ward 15 of the Matara General Hospital volunteere­d to perform the surgeries.

“There are thousands of elderly people who end up in total blindness caused by cataract due to their inability to afford surgery. The object of Vision 2020 is to provide cataract surgical services for a price affordable to both rural and urban people,” Co-ordinator of the Vision 2020 Sri Lanka Dr. Asela .Abeydeera said.
