- BY SANDUN A JAYASEKERA

May Day events will be conducted tomorrow by the main political parties in the country at a time when most of them have, more or less, confronted some kind of transformation or a shock.

One of the major political parties and main partners of the Consensus Government, the SLFP is in disarray with two May Day rallies, which is unprecedented.

The SLFP May Day rally will be held in Galle under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena as the party leader.

The party’s dissenting group or the faction loyal to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, together some other leftist parties, will have its rally in Kirulapone under the banner of the ‘Joint Opposition’ despite party instructions not to do so. Mr. Rajapaksa will address the Kirulapone rally.

There will be two May Day processions to the Public Ground in Galle near the Samanala Bridge, where main rally is to be held starting from Mahamodara on the North and from Dewata from the south of Galle town. The procession to the Kirulapone rally is scheduled to start from Narahenpita.

The main partner of the national unity Government, the United National Party (UNP) will have its May Day rally at the Campbell Park, Borella graced by party leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The JVP will hold its colourful May Day rally at the BRC grounds at Havelock Town and the procession is scheduled to start at the S. De S. Jayasinghe School ground in Dehiwela. The main upcountry Tamil political party, the Ceylon Workers’ Congress will hold its May Rally in Nuwara-eliya.
