- BY SANDUN JAYASEKARA

The military would start inquiries against Navy Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa, the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, after the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the Police concluded its investigations against him ,Army Spokesman Brigadier Jayanatha Jayaweera said.

Brigadier Jayaweera said an inquiry on several counts, namely how Yoshitha was recruited to the Sri Lanka Navy, whether he had minimum qualifications to join the Sri Lanka Navy as a cadet officer, how and why he had made numerous foreign trips, while in the Navy, whether human rights of any other navy officer or a cadet had been violated and how he won a scholarship to be trained in the Royal Navy in Britain, were the subjects of inquiry.“we are awaiting the conclusion of two inquiries of the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) to resume further inquiries,” Brigadier Jayaweera said. The Brigadier said the Sri Lanka Army, the Police or the Defence Ministry did not expect to conduct any further inquiries on the controversy relating to Opposition and TNA leader R. Sampanthan’s visit to an Army camp on February 29 in Kilinochchi.“nothing serious has taken place here. It is sad to note that certain political parties and media attempted to demonstrate this as a big issue which is not.what actually has happened is that when Mr. Sampanthan reached the gate of the camp, the security men had opened the gate when told that it was the leader of the Opposition. However, it is better if Mr. Sampanthan informed the relevant commanding officers about his trip prior to making it,” Jayaweera said.
