Haphazard parking obstructs pedestrian movement

- BY INDIKA MANOJ COORAY AND KUSAL CHAMATH

Parking vehicles on pavements in the Galle road in the Moratuwa town has resulted in the hampering of pedestrian movement.

The public lamented that they had to avoid the pavements and walk along the edge of the road facing the danger of being knocked down by vehicles. Road accidents often occurred in the town due to illegal parking of vehicles in pavements, they said.

Meanwhile, the infuriated pedestrians pointed out that unauthorized stalls and temporary structures on pavements compelled thousands of them to walk along the road creating heavy traffic congestion in the town during peak hours, both during dawn and dusk.

However, the residents of the area said the pedestrians often walked along the new Galle road exposing them to the danger of accidents, so as to avoid the congestion in the old Galle road.

They accused the Moratuwa Urban Council

The pedestrians said unauthorized stalls and temporary structures on pavements compelled them to walk along the road creating heavy traffic congestion in the town during peak hours

and the police of ignoring this serious problem, despite constant accidents taking place day in and day out.

However, the public pointed out that those prominent politicians prevented any action being taken against the unauthorized erections on pavements and illegal parking.

The residents requested the police to remove the unauthorized stalls on pavements and to implement a traffic plan for the Moratuwa town to avoid illegal parking.
