- BY SUSIL PREMALAL

After a lapse of twoyears, the premier school volleyball tournament, the DSI Supersport Schools Volleyball Championship has been revived this year with the district matches scheduled from May 7 to June 6.

The tournament will see over 3,000 schools competing in three age groups namely Under 14 boys/ girls, Under 16 boys/girls and Under 18 boys/girls, as they vie for the coveted title.

The national level matches will start from the June 20-26 while the finals are scheduled for July 15-16.

Initiated in 1999 by DSI along with the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and the Ministry of Education, the purpose of the championship is to provide an opportunity as well as necessary support in order to give rural and urban volleyball players a platform to show off their skills and build their careers in both the national and international arena. The initiation of the schools volleyball championship has contributed in the development of nearly 40 sports players.

Speaking at a press conference held at the National Olympic Committee headquarters, WGS Erandika, President, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation said heavy international commitments last year meant they could not conduct the junior tournament. “Our focus was on the international calendar last year. But this year we will conduct at least six national level events,” he said adding that they would find necessary finances to conduct these tournaments.
