GOVT. WILL NOT RUN UNTIL 2020: LAL KANTHA

- BY PIYUMI FONSEKA

The government, which is already cracking under the pressure, will not run until 2020, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Trade Union Wing Leader K.D.LAL Kantha said yesterday (1).

He stated that workers of the country will not tolerate more of the same since the workforce of the country had been subjected to suppression to an unprecedented level under the present government which had curtailed workers’ rights.

Mr. Lal Kantha said those who promised to settle the problems of the people, have now begun diverting the people’s attention elsewhere.

He said May Day or International Workers’ Day has tragically been reduced to a question of whether the

workers would choose to attend the Kirulapone or Galle rallies.

“This day is of importance to the workers of the country, but this year’s May Day has been eclipsed by the KirulaponeGalle issue,” Lalkantha said. “They would have to suffer the consequences of the new tax policy which come into operation the very next day. Those who are in the government are not ready to make sacrifices for the betterment of the country. People should understand that going to either the Kirulapone or Galle will not solve their problems and the solution is where to fight until socialism is established in the country,”

“Now the government cannot settle its debts and cannot pay people their wages, but are asking us to make sacrifices in order to get the country out of debt trap which has nothing to do with us and are not of our making. From tomorrow, VAT will be increased for all the goods we purchase. As far as we know, around 17 labour acts are scheduled to be amended by the government. Labour rights will be curtailed even more. This government, which doesn’t work the workers’ rights, will not be running until 2020. That much is for sure,” Lal Kantha said.
