Kavinda: Country was not secure during former regime

The Opposition protestors had shown their aggressive nature by attacking an ambulance during the Pada Yatra march, a Government MP said yesterday.

Government MP Dr. Kavinda Jayawardene told a media briefing that the protestors in the Opposition had blocked the ambulance and had attacked it during the protest on Thursday, without allowing those medical assistants to carry out their duty.

without allowing those medical assistants to carry out their duty.

“This is clearly an exhibition of aggressiveness,” he said.

Responding to a question raised by the journalists that the reports have revealed there were no patient inside the ambulance at the time of the incident, Dr. Jayawardene said the ambulance was on its way to pick up a patient and transport him to hospital.

He said the Government was watchful whether the Police would take action against those who attacked the vehicle.

Asked about his opinion on the number of protestors which the Opposition protest march had attracted, the MP said the Government would not be affected no matter how many protestors the opposition would bring.

“The Government has more crowd than the Opposition. Therefore, it should not worry about the crowd at the protest march,” the MP added.

Referring to the theme of the Opposition protest “Surakshitha Ratak” (A secure country) was ridiculous as the county was never secure during the previous regime, as Sri Lankan fish exports to the EU was banned, while the country also lost the GSP Plus status.
