DEERANANDA MV PILIMATALA­WA COME OUT ON TOP

Deerananda MV Pilimatala­wa came out on top at the 47th T.B. Jayah Memorial All Island School Boxing Championsh­ip which concluded at the Jayatileke Stadium in Nawalapiti­ya.

Deerananda MV a school that began boxing only three years ago outfoxed prominent schools around the island as they bagged two golds, two silvers and a bronze medal to clinch the title.

They pipped Vidyaratan­a Pirivena University College Horana who bagged two gold medals a silver and three bronze medals to the second spot while Kadugannaw­a National School came out as the third best team having won two gold medals and a silver medal.

Meanwhile Mohamed Aseen of Royal Colombo winner of 44-46kgs bout in the 15-16 age group was adjudged the best boxer while K.M.E.L.N. Bandara from the champion Deerananda MV team took the best losers’ award.

The champion Deerananda MV team comprised C. Ekanayake (Capt), S.M.S.K Bandara, L.M.B. Dissanayak­e, N.S. Munasinghe, R.D.A. Kularatne, J.G.Y. Jayatileke, L.R.G. Pahasara, H.M.K. Ekanayake, K.M.E.L. Bandara. K.K. Sunil (Coach) and Bandula Vithana Gamage (Advisor).

The boxing championsh­ip conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Associatio­n saw the participat­ion of over 220 young pugilists hailing from 54 schools around the island.

Athula Jaywardena Director of Sports and Physical Education from the Department of Education in the Central Province was the chief guest who gave away the awards. Results: (33-35kgs – 13-14 years – Schoolboy) – H.P. Walpola (Rajasinghe MV Hanwella) beat M.D. Jayalath (Vidyaratan­a Horana). (35-37kgs – 13-14 years – Schoolboy) – G.K.P.U. Mihiran (Vidyaratan­a Horana) beat T.M.S. Weerakoon (Rajasinghe MV Panwila). (37-39kgs – 13-14 years – Schoolboy) – A.H. Maduranga (Vidyaratan­a Horana) beat C.G.T. Madushan (Nalanda Colombo). (39-41kgs – Schoolboy) – E.J.A.S. Dilsara (Kadugannaw­a NS) beat K.M.L. Navodya (Gamini MMV Ingiriya).

(13-14 years – 41-43kgs - Schoolboy) – I.G.S.C. Gunatileke (Vidyartha Kandy) beat R.P.R. Kaumal (Gamini MMV Ingiriya). (13-14 years – 43-45kgs - Schoolboy) – D.M.K.G. Kapukotuwa (Pallebowal­a MV) beat M.R.M. Arshad (Mahanama Kandy). (15-16 years – 44-46kgs – Junior) – A. Althaf (Royal Colombo) beat K.M.E.L. Bandara (Deerananda MV Pilimatala­wa).
