Premalal Jayasekera, six others indicted

Ratnapura District MP Premalal Jayasekera and six others were indicted by the Attorney General in the Ratnapura Provincial High Court on charges of killing Shantha Dodangoda and injuring two others in a shooting incident while they were decorating the venue for a propaganda rally.

The rally was to be attended by the then common opposition presidenti­al candidate Maithripal­a Sirisena during last year’s election campaign.

The case was postponed to November 7 by Ratnapura Provincial High Court Judge U.S.B. Karaliyadd­a.

The suspects were meanwhile, released on a personal bail of Rs.500,000 each.

Indictment­s were filed on nine counts under clauses 140, 146, 296 and 300 of the Penal Code. In this incident D. Susil Perera alias Shantha Dodangoda was shot dead while two others were injured.

The accused include: Sabaragamu­wa provincial councillor Aruna Nilantha Jayasinghe, former Kahawatte Pradeshiya Sabah President Vajira Dharshana De Silva, MP Premalal Jayasekera alias Chocka Malli, Pathum Dananjaya alias Pela, Asanka Namal alias Sergeant, Nilanka Pradeep and Ajith Malavi Guneratne. shooting and injuring of K.W. Karunadasa Weerasingh­e and Mohamed Hussain Ifran on January 5, 2015 while participat­ing in an unlawful assembly. They were indicted under the Penal Code clauses 300 and 146.

The postmortem examinatio­n report, a pistol, two medical reports, 3 CDS containing CCTV camera footage and a report from the Colombo University CCTV camera data research unit, Government Analyst’s reports and a schedule of 59 witnesses were all produced in Court.
