protesters refrained from sending their children to school. They pointed out that the school with a staff of 19 teachers had classes up to GCE Ordinary Level and that the activities of the five teachers caused obstructions to the smooth functioning of the school and that they seriously affected the students preparing for the GCE Examination in December. The parents accused the Chief Minister, North Central Province Peshala Jayaratne and the Provincial Minister of Education of ignoring their continual representations in this regard from early this year. A team of senior officials including Zonal Director Kumudini Ariytawansa who called over at the school when the protest was going on were compelled to resolve the issue immediately and were obstructed from going out. The Zonal Director in consultation with the ministry’s secretary transferred the teachers concerned to the Zonal Education Office with immediate effect. However when the protesters demanded her decision in writing, she left for the education office under police protection to bring the transfer letters.
