RICHMOND’S ASALANKA ADJUDGED THE BEST FOR SECOND SUCCESSIVE YEAR
Richmondite Charith Asalanka was adjudged the Singer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year for the second successive year at the Singer Schools Cricket Awards ceremony held at the Museaus College auditorium on Tuesday.
The former Sri Lanka U-19 skipper Asalanka who has been a prolific performer both with the bat and ball is currently representing the Sri Lanka A against the visiting West Indies A side in Pallekele. Asalanka was not present to accept the award yesteday due to his commitment with the Sri Lanka A side.
Asalanka has been performing with immense success for the last two school cricket season for his school Richmond and also led the Sri Lanka U-19 at the ICC U-19 World Cup cricket tournament which was held in Bangladesh early this year.
Sammu Ashan of Ananda who led his school side and was also a member of the Sri Lanka U19 team took runner-up award of this category. The other players to be adjudged winners in the individual awards of the Division One category were Sanjula Abeywickrama (Isipathana – Best Batsman), Avishka Thiulanjana (St. Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa – Best Bowler), Asitha Gihan (St. Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa – Best Fielder) and Pramod Maduwantha (Isipathana – Best All Rounder).
The winners of the same awards in the Division Two category were Risitha Upamal (Dharmasoka MV Ambalngoda – Best Batsman), Lasith Udagedera (St. Mary’s Kegalle – Best Bowler), Nilantha Rukshitha (Devapathairaja MMV Rathgama – Best Fielder) and Raveen Yasas (Devapathiraja MMV – Best All Rounder).
Meanwhile, St. Peter’s and St. Sebastian’s bagged two team events winning the Under 19 league championship as joint champions and St Sebastian’s the limited over champions and St. Peter’s the T20 champions.
In the Division Two category Wesley and St. Mary’s Kegalle were joint champions in the league segment while Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama was adjudged the Best Up and Coming team. The Provincial winners were (Anuradhapura Central (North Central Province), Bandarawela MMV (Uva Province), Kegalu Vidyalaya (Sabaragamuwa Province), St John’s Jaffna (Northern Province), St. Anne’s Kurunegala (North Western Province), Trinity (Central Province), Richmond (Southern Province and Isipathana (Western Province).
The chief guest at the awards ceremony was Asoka Peiris, CEO of Singer Sri Lanka Ltd with former Sri Lanka captain and international umpire Roshan Mahanama gracing the occasion as guest of honour along with Kumar Samarasinghe, Sales Director Singer Sri Lanka and K. Mathivanan, Vice President SLC.
