Manesh wins first gold

School Games Athletic Meet

Promising athlete Manesh Malintha of St. Rita’s College Thaldeka won the first gold medal at the 32nd All-island School Games Athletic Championsh­ips which commenced at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

Malintha won the Boys Under-17 discus final with a performanc­e of 53.12 metres. A total of six finals were worked off on the opening day but none of the athletes managed to produce a meet record.

The event commenced following a colourful opening ceremony where the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m was the Chief Guest.

The Minister speaking at this occasion said that he intend to revive the 1984 National School Games Sports concept once again and establish a similar school in each district. The event conducted by the Ministry of Education will conclude on October 17. RESULTS (Boys): Discus Throw Under-17 : 1. Manesh Malintha (St. Rita’s College Thaldeka) 53.12m, 2.
