Manesh wins first gold
School Games Athletic Meet
Promising athlete Manesh Malintha of St. Rita’s College Thaldeka won the first gold medal at the 32nd All-island School Games Athletic Championships which commenced at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday.
Malintha won the Boys Under-17 discus final with a performance of 53.12 metres. A total of six finals were worked off on the opening day but none of the athletes managed to produce a meet record.
The event commenced following a colourful opening ceremony where the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was the Chief Guest.
The Minister speaking at this occasion said that he intend to revive the 1984 National School Games Sports concept once again and establish a similar school in each district.
