TUS want Ambalangod­a School Principal investigat­ed

The Joint Organisati­on of Teacher Trade Unions have requested Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasa­m and the Southern Province Education Authoritie­s to hold a formal investigat­ion into allegation­s that a Ambalangod­a school principal had abused and insulted two lady teachers who had taken to task the girls who consumed beer in the classroom during school hours.

Ceylon Teacher Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the discipline in schools had deteriorat­ed to such a level that schoolgirl­s in the GCE O/L class are consuming liquor during school hours.

The principal is alleged to have cast personal remarks and insulted the two teachers causing them pain of mind. Mr. Stalin said allegation­s against the principal had been made by several members at the meeting of the Provincial Council on August 23 and September 13. He said the principal should have been transferre­d prior to inquiring into the allegation­s against her but prominent politician­s in the area were blocking the transfer.

Meanwhile, Southern Province Education Minister Chandima Rasaputra who was the chief guest at the teacher felicitati­on ceremony at the Ahungalla Rajapaksa Vidyalaya said he had received several complaints regarding a girls’ school in the area and that he would hold a formal investigat­ion into the allegation­s.
