The Joint Organisation of Teacher Trade Unions have requested Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and the Southern Province Education Authorities to hold a formal investigation into allegations that a Ambalangoda school principal had abused and insulted two lady teachers who had taken to task the girls who consumed beer in the classroom during school hours.
Ceylon Teacher Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the discipline in schools had deteriorated to such a level that schoolgirls in the GCE O/L class are consuming liquor during school hours.
The principal is alleged to have cast personal remarks and insulted the two teachers causing them pain of mind. Mr. Stalin said allegations against the principal had been made by several members at the meeting of the Provincial Council on August 23 and September 13. He said the principal should have been transferred prior to inquiring into the allegations against her but prominent politicians in the area were blocking the transfer.
Meanwhile, Southern Province Education Minister Chandima Rasaputra who was the chief guest at the teacher felicitation ceremony at the Ahungalla Rajapaksa Vidyalaya said he had received several complaints regarding a girls’ school in the area and that he would hold a formal investigation into the allegations.
